The WA Liberals have pledged to build a train station in Karnup if the party wins the 2029 State election as part of its pitch to Secret Harbour voters.
The Opposition Party says it would put $90 million towards the long sought-after project, as it aims to win over voters just over a month from the Secret Harbour by-election.
A station in Karnup has long been promised, first flagged by Labor in the lead up to its unsuccessful 2013 election.
But the station has since been put on the backburner, with a Lakelands station built instead thanks to a funding deal with the Liberal Federal Government in 2023.
Liberal candidate Ryan Robertson said locals had been crying out for the station for years.
“People in Secret Harbour and surrounding suburbs are tired of being told Karnup Station is coming,” Mr Robertson said.
“They have watched Labor make the same promise election after election while the station has remained unfunded and undelivered.”
The Liberal Party are locked in a tense three-way race with Labor and One Nation, with the former having held the seat ever since it was created.
Both Premier Roger Cook and his Transport Minister Rita Saffioti have avoided ruling an announcement on the station either in or out in the lead up to the August 29 ballot.
Just on Sunday, Ms Saffioti refused to rule out an announcement, but said it was “something for the future”.
“With Karnup, we’ve always said it’s subject to further work on the developments around Karnup,” she said.
“We’ve been going through a detailed planning process in relation to the land adjacent to the station, so rezoning that as part of a wider plan.
The Metronet website still states “the State Government is committed to building a new station at Karnup and will continue to pursue investment opportunities with the Federal Government”.
