This morning, we are introducing a new series. We’re very excited about it. We’re calling it Between Us. So how does it work? It brings together two accomplished people from the same field for a candid conversation and the opportunity to learn from one another. So we’re kicking it off with reality show giants. There she is, Julie Chen Moonves, from Big Brother and Phil Keoghan of The Amazing Race. They discuss their pasts, presenting two of the longest-running reality shows that, by the way, are still on TV. [THEME MUSIC] When you realized that you were going to be the Big Brother host and you came out, did you think, OK, oh, my God, I’m so glad this is happening, or did you think, oh, man, have I really given up the opportunity to do 60 Minutes? I thought my career was over. The reviews hated the show. They hated me. So externally, people who don’t even know me are attacking the show, the furniture, the lighting, me as host. Who do you think is going to take home the grand prize? George? The New Yorker, Eddie. So when did that all that change, and then you were like, OK, this actually might work out? Just last week, when we marked our 1,000th episode. I’m thinking– Congratulations, by the way. Oh, thanks. Big Brother1,000th episode celebration. [CHEERING] We’re the first and only prime time show to ever do that.
00:01:23
That’s incredible.
00:01:23
That’s when I thought, they might like us.
00:01:26
Yes. They really, really like us. Maybe they like you. And maybe. I mean, who knows? I never count on. I just play for today.
00:01:34
Yes. [THEME MUSIC] I love live TV. It’s just so much fun. But Amazing Raceis not live. It’s not live, but it is. We have live elements to it. It’s as live because you can’t be like– And we can’t redo things. Go! Do some reality shows fudge things? And yes, there are some shows that do that, but– But Amazing Raceand Big Brotherare not– No. –that way. We have, I think, prided ourselves in making sure that we keep it legit and keep it real. And because it is a competition, you can’t just go changing the rules mid-show.
00:02:15
No, you can’t say like, Phil and Julie, you’re in seventh place, and they’d be like, oh, we didn’t get that, and then say it again. You want the real reaction. You have to get it. Today, it’s where 13 Amazing Raceteams will leap from the rafters almost 300 feet above the ground, when they try to catch a salmon with their claws.
00:02:38
Has 39 seasons of Amazing Race changed you as a person? Oh, yeah. I mean, gosh, I mean, I was in my early 30s. It’s 25 years later, do the math. I mean, it’s like– but absolutely, just my perspective on the world. Which country has been the most welcoming to production for Amazing Race? Like, my favorite place to go outside of New Zealand, because I get to see my family, is Italy.
00:03:10
Why?
00:03:11
Just the food, the culture. Like, you’re literally walking through a museum. Like, the whole country is a museum. But I remember once, we were working with the crew, and we were at the pit stop. And the Italian crew turned up, and they were all so relaxed. They were having espressos and everything. And I was explaining to them, when the teams come in, it’s going to happen very quickly. And we have one shot, and that’s it. And they’re like, yeah, don’t worry, don’t worry. And, you want the espresso? So sure enough, they did not finish building the crane. All the teams ran in within 10 minutes, and they were done. And then the guy goes, OK, we are ready, now. And I said, well, I’m really sorry to say, but you know what I was saying about the teams? I mean, we’re done. He goes, what do you want me to do? I said, well, let’s pack it up, and let’s see if we can get it on time tomorrow. And he goes, OK. And then the next day, they were on time. That sounds very stressful. It is stressful. [THEME MUSIC] I like this new series. Me too. Still looking really good. Yeah. I love how big the CBS logo was. CBS! Yeah, it does take you behind-the-scenes, though.
00:04:25
It does. And what I really like hearing from Julie is how often we have imposter syndrome. Even though we achieve a certain level of Fame and success, we’re still constantly doubting ourselves. Even when you reach the pinnacle of the top of your game, like Julie has and Phil, as well.
00:04:42
Yeah, no doubt about it. I’m looking forward to it. And you can look forward to it and see more of Julia and Phil’s conversation on the CBS MorningsYouTube channel. We have some really cool stuff going into 2027.
