Japan has been named the world’s most sought-after trekking destination in new research by small-group walk and cycle company World Expeditions.
It was a clear winner in the inaugural World’s Best Treks Survey.
“Japan has quietly become one of the great trekking destinations of our time,” says Sue Badyari, CEO of World Expeditions. “Routes such as the Kumano Kodo, the Nakasendo Way and the Shikoku Pilgrimage offer a rare combination of deep cultural and spiritual heritage, accessible yet rewarding walking routes and well-developed trail networks and accommodation.”
The survey collected 13,453 destination preferences from 11,952 participants in Australia, New Zealand, the UK and and North America.
The findings of the survey reveal a top five:
1 Japan — 2107 votes
2 Nepal — 1949
3 Patagonia — 1858
4 Inca Trail (Peru) — 1340
5 Bhutan — 1237
