Nu Holdings (NU) stock is slipping this morning as investors digest media reports that the fintech firm is in preliminary talks to acquire UK-based digital bank Monzo.
But Needham’s senior Kyle Peterson believes the pullback is unwarranted and has actually created a meaningful buying opportunity for long-term investors.
He assigns a $19 price target on the company.
Versus the start of 2026, Nu shares are now down over 25%.
What’s weighing on Nu stock price today?
NU stock is tumbling on September 28 primarily because the rumoured transaction carries an eye-popping price tag between £8 billion and £10 billion.
Investors are concerned that such a major deal could severely dilute their existing stake if Nu issues equity alongside cash reserves to finance the purchase.
Plus, skeptics point out that Monzo was valued at about £4.5 billion in the 2024 funding round, making the implied premium difficult to justify without flawless execution in unlocking material synergies.
Finally, the potential acquisition marks a fundamental strategy pivot for Nu Holdings.
Having built its core business by expanding across Latin American markets like Brazil, Mexico, and Colombia, stepping into the highly competitive EU banking market introduces entirely new regulatory requirements and complex operational integration hurdles.
Why Needham recommends buying NU shares
While retail and institutional trading floors reacted with caution, Needham analyst Kyle Peterson views the price drop as a compelling buying opportunity for discerning investors.
In his research note, he emphasized that acquiring Monzo would instantly hand Nu a scaled, highly profitable footprint in the UK and EU banking sectors without having to build from scratch.
The strategic fit is underpinned by impressive operational scale – Monzo brings 15.2 million loyal customers, £25.7 billion in total deposits, and £1.7 billion in annualized revenue.
According to Needham, securing a premier EU neobank asset with robust underlying profitability outweighs near-term noise, positioning Nu stock to become a truly global digital banking giant.
How to play Nu Holdings on the pullback?
Ultimately, the initial pushback reflects familiar institutional skepticism toward large-scale cross-border M&A rather than structural flaws in Nu’s core business model.
But if negotiated on favorable terms, integrating Monzo’s mature deposit base could significantly lower Nu’s cost of capital while accelerating product cross-selling across international borders.
With NU shares trading at an attractive earnings multiple relative to its historical norms following the year-to-date pullback, Needham’s bullish call suggests that patient investors stand to gain as the market gradually appreciates the long-term strategic merit, customer expansion, and “meaningful” revenue synergies inherent in this ambitious European expansion.
Note that other Wall Street analysts seem to agree with Peterson’s constructive stance as well.
According to Barchart, the consensus rating on Nu Holdings Inc. sits at Moderate Buy at the time of writing, with the mean price target of about $17.73 indicating massive upside potential from here.
